I love that photos can tell a story.

I admire the very talented street photographers, photo journalists and family lifestyle photographers out there. They can convey an entire story from a single image. It’s a powerful thing.

Although I don’t claim to have the insight that the professionals in those fields do, I believe that you can tell simple stories with the snaps you take at home.

The simplest way is to give your subject something to do. If it’s your kids, adding bubbles can take a portrait from a stiff, posed image with a forced smile into a freeze frame of a moment in time, with the joy clearly evident. Props add to the story. I love this photo of my daughter at the library with the oversized book. It’s comical and adorable. Imagine that same shot without the book – just her on the chair. It doesn’t have the same effect, does it?

You can give your products things to do too. Pair it up with items that tell a story. Styling will give your product a place, a time and an emotion. This creates a connection with the viewer and they have an insight into how your product fits into their life. And that’s a good thing when the majority of our purchases are based on emotions.

Take this example: three photos of the same scarf. The product on its own, one styled to convey an afternoon cozying on the couch reading and having afternoon tea (see the story there?) and by adding a jacket, the other styled for a crisp, clear afternoon out and about (another story). Which resonates with you the best? How do you connect to the stories?

If you would like to learn more about telling a story with your products (or in your photos generally) I’m co-hosting a masterclass with my friend Social Elucidation on the 22nd of April 2017 in Subiaco. This workshop will teach you how to use your phone to capture images to best promote your business. And how to use these images to grow your social media accounts that will ultimately result in more customers/clients for your small business.

For more information or to register your interest send me a message or you can purchase your tickets directly here. Hope you can make it and look forward to seeing you there!

EDIT: If you missed this particular workshop and are interested in all it has to offer then send me a message to be notified when the next one is coming up. We WILL be running more!
